CAD Designer – Structural Mass Timber

For over 40 years, Normerica has been setting the standard for exceptional timber frame structures for both residential and commercial projects. Our Design Department is looking for a Structural CAD Designer to join our growing team. Successful candidates will develop structural shop drawings for both residential and commercial mass timber projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop structural designs for timber frame and mass timber projects
  • Produce 2D detailed drawings for engineering, client approval and construction
  • Draft and maintain 3D CAD project models
  • Collaborate with other departments, engineers and consultants
  • Optimize designs for cost-efficiency, architectural intent, and constructability
  • Produce accurate take-offs and assist with tendering prospective projects
  • Read and interpret blueprints/contract drawings
  • Communicate effectively with project teams
  • Provide technical support from concept through to construction completion
  • Other duties as assigned

Profile

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to organize and effectively manage multiple project details and deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy of drawings
  • Ability to work independently, in fast paced environment
  • Solid understanding of construction practices; site experience considered an asset

Qualifications

  • Post secondary education in a design/drafting program such as Engineering, Technologist or Architecture
  • Proficient in the use of Cadworks
  • Design experience in low rise, residential, wood construction (OBC Part 9), an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiar with Architectural and Structural construction components
  • Familiar with heavy timber, cross laminated timber (CLT), glue-laminated timber (Glulam) and mass timber components considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of Ontario Building Code Part 3 and Part 9 considered an asset
  • Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) certification considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of wood properties, connection details, and load-bearing analysis, considered an asset

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of working experience in heavy timber/mass timber, structural design
